Introduction
The Department of Music was established in the year 2009. The Department had a humble start with a few Guest faculties with a purpose to introduce the knowledge of ‘soft power’ of performing art in education. It may not be out of context to mention here that the state of Tripura holds a rich musical heritage as the Manikya Rulers of Tripura promoted the Indian classical Music in their kingdom through various musical and cultural activities organized in their Court as well as in public and patronizing Indian classical music by honoring musicians with various felicitations and awards. Moreover, the presence of Court musicians very well endorse the deep rooted love of the royalties of Tripura for Indian Classical music and dance. A narrative along this line may help to establish the fact regarding the relevance of music in the Royal kingdom of Tripura in the bygone era which contributed to bring in music in the main curriculum of education in Tripura. It is a well-known fact of history that once while on his musical tour to Kashmir, the renowned musician of Bishnupur Gharana Pandit Jadu Bhatt gave a soulful performance but then the Maharaja of Kashmir challenged him to acquire appreciation from the Maharaja of Tripura the then contemporary Ruler Maharaja Bir Chandra Manikya, as an appreciation from him really was held in high esteem by every musician of the country. It was then that Jadu Bhatt took the challenge and impressed the Maharaja of Tripura and was felicitated by the title of ‘Tanrang’ by Maharaja Bir Chandra Manikya.
Vision of the Department
When we look back through the mirrors of time, we can
experience that the royalties of Tripura dreamt of a holistic
edifice of higher learning called “Abode of Learning” in line with
the ideals of Santiniketan, Visva-bharati as established by gurudev
Rabindranath Tagore with whom the Royal family of Tripura enjoyed an
eternal bond of friendship and common passion for art, poetry and
literature. The National Education Policy 2020 has also linked
education with vocational skill and multi-disciplinary education
system.
Therefore, the Department of Music envisions creating an ability to
appreciate Indian classical music amongst its students and promote
this heritage of India through its curriculum.
