Science Forum

A Brief History

The Tripura State Council for Science & Technology, in consultation with Directorate of Higher Education has launched a programme to form "Science Forum" in each of the institutes of Higher and Technical Education in Tripura in the session 2009-2010.

Organizational Structure

The organizational structure of the Forum was suggested as:
President: Principal of the concerned College
Coordinator: One teacher nominated by the Principal
Secretary: One student from the concerned College
Joint Secretary: One student from the concerned College

Consequently, a Science Forum has been formed in Women's College on 25th January 2010. So our science forum has started its journey from infancy with Mr. Abhijit Sarkar, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, as the first selected Co-ordinator of Science Forum.

Activities of Science Forum in 2014-2015

In the year 2014-2015, Science Forum, Women's College has participated in the Inter College & University Science Drama Competition-2015. The name of the Drama was "Mrityu Purir Daitya Raj". Dr. Samhita Bhaumik, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry was the guide teacher for this purpose. The drama was performed at ICFAI University, Kamalghat, Tripura, on 21.01.2015. The main theme of the drama was nicely played in the stage by our students.

Department of Zoology, in collaboration with Science Forum, Women's College, has Organized a "Meet the Scientist Programme" in collaboration with Science Forum on 27th January 2015. Prof. Khitish Majumdar, Department of Entomology and Agricultural Zoology, The institute of Agricultural Science, Banaras Hindu University and Ex. Scientist of CCMB, Hyderabad, was present as a distinguished speaker on that very occasion. The topic of his lecture was Biotechnology: Perspective and Prospectiveť. The programme has been chaired by Honorable Principal of the College.

Science Forum, Women's College, has celebrated National Science Day-2015 on 28th February 2015 at 10.30 a.m. onwards at Science B (Science Block) with great enthusiasm. Professor Sangram Sinha, Dean, Faculty of Science, Tripura University, (chaired as Chief Guest) delivered a valuable and popular lecture on the theme "Science for Nation Building". Mr. Nataraj Datta, acted as Guest of honour, delivered a speech indicating the importance and significance of such programme. As a part of the celebration, Popular Talks in Physics and Chemistry have also been organized. Dr. Syed Arshad Hussain, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, Tripura University and Dr. Sudhan Debnath, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, M.B.B. College delivered popular talks on Physics and Chemistry respectively.

As a part of the inaugural function of NSD-2015, the second edition of wall magazine "RAINBOW" has been released. The magazine was highly appreciated by all the dignitaries present. Students and teachers of the College worked hard to make this creative venture a success.

Department of Human Physiology, Environmental Science and Physical Education, in collaboration with Science Forum, Women's College, have Organized a program on "Women's Health" on 12th March 2015 at Science B, Science Block. On this occasion, Popular Talks were delivered by Dr. Sharmistha Banerjee, Associate Professor, Department of Zoology, Ramthakur College, Agartala, on "Environmental degradation and Women's health" and by Chief guest, Dr. Ela Lodh, Renowned Gynaecologist on “Women’s health and related problems” in the first session of the program.

In the next session an "Outreach Program for Community" was organized by the Science Forum for the Tribal Students residing in Women's College Hostel. Dr. Ela Lodh delivered her speech regarding awareness about "Health and Hygiene" for community.

Soma Banik, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, is now acting as the Co-ordinator of Science Forum, Women's College.

Activities of Science Forum in 2013-2014:

In the year 2013-2014, the activities of Science Forum, Women's College was little bit quenched due to inadequate sanctioned fund from TSCST. In spite of this financial constraint it had participated in the Inter College & University Science Drama Competition-2013. The name of the Drama was "Sabar Katha Bhabai". Dr. Sarmistha Banerjee, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology acted as the guide teacher for this matter. The drama was held on December 13-16, 2013 at Government Degree College, Dharmanagar.

Science Forum had participated in the State Science Fair-2014 at Umakanta Academy (English Medium), Agartala, with one Science Model on Applied Mathematics from the Department of Mathematics, Women’s College. The Name of the model was "Transportation and assignment problem". The guide teacher of the Science model was Mr. Jewel Hussain, Guest Teacher, Department of Mathematics.

Activities of Science Forum in 2012-2013:

Science Forum, Women's College had participated in the Inter College & University Science Drama Competition-2012. The name of the Drama was "Daini". Dr. Sarmistha Banerjee, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology acted as the guide teacher for this matter. The drama was performed at Matangini Pritilata Shabhagriha on 28.11.2012. The main theme of the drama was nicely played in the stage by our students and won five prizes among eighteen participant colleges. The prizes are:

  1. Performance: 1st
  2. Best Actress: 1st
  3. Best Actress: 3rd
  4. Script Writer: 2nd
  5. Director: 1st

The drama was again performed at Umakanta Academy (English Medium), Agartala in State Science Fair 2012-13 on 5th Jan 2012.

Science Forum Women's College had organized a seminar on "National Year of Mathematics-2012" on 24. 12. 2012 at Smart Class Room-I, Women’s College to commemorate 125th Birth Anniversary of Mathematical Genius Srinivas Ramanujan. Dr. Sarmistha Bhattacharjee (Halder), Reader, Department of Mathematics, Tripura University had delivered her valuable lecture on the life, work & achievement of Srinivas Ramanujan on this occasion. A quiz competition for the students on "Basic Mathematics" was carried out. The whole program was carried out nicely and all the members present in the Room enjoyed the program wholeheartedly.

Wall magazine "Rainbow" of Science Forum, Women's College, was published on the 5th September, 2012, for nurturing the creative minds of the college students in scientific world.

Science Forum had also participated in the State Science Fair -2013 which was held from 27th and 29th December, 2012 at Umakanta Academy (English Medium), Agartala, with two Science Models from Physics & Zoology Departments of Women's College. The guide teachers of the Science models are Prof. Rahul Bhattacharjee and Dr. Sarmistha Banerjee, respectively.

Department of Geography with the financial assistance from Science Forum, Women's College had organized a seminar on "Climate Change with special reference to Tripura aspect" on 19.01.13. Dr. Nivedita Das (Pan), Reader, Department of Geography, Tripura University, delivered her valuable lecture on the said topic.

Science Forum had celebrated the National Science Day-2013 with great enthusiasm. The theme selected for this year was "Genetically modified crops and Food security". Dr. Mihir Lal Roy, Deputy Member Sceretary, Tripura State Council for Science and Technology, delivered his valuable speech on that occasion. A seminar was also organized on this occasion on "Intellectual Property Rights".

Dr. Samhita Bhaumik, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, acted as the Co-ordinator of the Forum in this period.

Activities of Science Forum in 2011-2012:

In the year 2011-2012, Science Forum, Women’s College Unit, had performed very enthusiastically under the active supervision of the Co-ordinator Dr. Samhita Bhaumik, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, in different programs with the financial support of Tripura State Council for Science & Technology. This year Science Forum became the Champion participating in the Inter College & University Science Drama Competition-2011 among the eighteen participant colleges. The name of the Drama was "Amra Karbo Joy". The drama was performed at Udaipur Town Hall on 30.09.2011. The main theme of the drama was nicely played in the stage by our students and won five prizes among eighteen participant colleges. The prizes are:

  3. Best Actress: 3rd
  4. Script Writer: 2nd
  5. Director: 1st

The drama was again performed at Umakanta Academy (English Medium), Agartala in State Science Fair 2011-12 on 5th Jan 2012.

Science Forum Women's College had organized a seminar on "International Year of Chemistry-2011" on 24.12.2011 at Science Block, Women's College. The main theme of IYC-2011 is "Chemistry-our life our society". In this occasion, a quiz competition among the college students on "Basic Chemistry" was carried out. The whole program was carried out nicely and all the members present in the Hall enjoyed the program wholeheartedly.

In the State Science Fair 2011-2012, five science models from different departments of Women's College was exhibited at Umakanta Academy (English Medium), Agartala. The theme of the models was related to the sub-theme Health, Energy-Resources and Conservation, Disaster Management.

4. Solar Energy-The Future Energy of Mankind Prof. Rahul Bhattacharya, Babli Debnath and Aparna Singha Roy, Dept. of Physics To consume solar energy in low cost.
5. Disaster Management Dr. Madhumita Debnath, Tanaya Chakraborty & Papia Acharjee, Dept. of Geography To create awareness among the society regarding the effects of earthquake.

28th February is celebrated as National Science Day in India every year to commemorate the discovery of the Raman Effect. In our college we celebrated NSD-2012 on 07.03.2012 at Science Block, Women's College. The theme of NSD-2012 is "Clean Energy Option and Nuclear Safety". A seminar on the mentioned topic was organized by Science Forum.
