Department of Environmental Science

Introduction

The Department of Environmental Science was established in the year 2014. The department is interdisciplinary in nature and course structure is based on knowledge of environmental degradation, analytical and restoration technique and natural resource management strategy. The Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary program that focuses on the state of the environment and serious environmental problems that the world faces. The department is equipped with laboratory and facility of ecological studies like biodiversity estimation, forestry, physicochemical analysis of soil and water, biogeochemical cycling etc. Presently two courses viz. B.Sc Environmental Science (Elective) & Environment studies (Foundation Course) are being successfully run by the Departments.

Vision

The vision of the Bachelor of Science degree program in Environmental Science at Women’s College, Agartala is:

 “To produce skilled manpower through value based quality education who can address present and sprouting environmental challenges for self –reliance, sustenance and betterment of society.”

Mission

The following broad missions are conjuring up by the department for the coming days are:

  • To provide knowledge, skills, tools and awareness pertaining to environmental quality and human-environment interactions in order to improve and sustain the function of environmental systems and protect human health.

  • To provide bachelor-level degrees in Environmental Science and Environmental Studies (Foundation Course) and to challenge undergraduates to integrate knowledge and research in the natural and social sciences with ethics, service, and leadership to promote a sustainable world. The Department will also facilitate the first-rate opportunities for research, service, and study abroad.

  • To contribute quality instruction and scientific expertise, both now and for the future, to meeting global challenges in supplies of natural resources, mitigation of natural hazards, protection of the environment, and public awareness of science.

  • To generate technical expertise for addressing environmental issues (including contaminant remediation, sustainable food production, soil and water quality) in rural and urban centers.

  • To make capable of our students witha series of academic courses and co-curricular activities, they will learn how human activity impacts the environment and will obtain the critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary to productively contribute to solutions.

Laboratory Facilities

The department is having well equipped laboratory with a facility of ecological and forest studies, climatic data collection, physicochemical analysis of soil, water analysis, noise level and light intensity measurement etc.
